Triplets' First Football Game

Although I bleed purple and gold for LSU, I am constantly surrounded by Houston Cougars.  My entire family went to college there and I actually grew up going to U of H football and basketball games.  So, naturally the girls' first collegiate football game would be at U of H.  The timing worked out well and my parents had been begging for us to come, so we went last Saturday when the Cougars played Tulane.  Unfortunately they lost, but we had a exhausting good time.

Triple Play: 17 Months

How old?  17 Months.

Our weights? estimates S: 19 lbs 8 oz T: 21 lbs 8 oz M: 20 lbs 9 oz
They are currently wearing 12 months clothes and need to be wearing 12/18 month jammies but we still squeeze in to some 2 piece 9 months.  Just trying to make it til Christmas...

Our sleeping patterns?  We are at that transition time from 2 naps to 1.  The girls are good either way and it is making doing things outside of the house a little easier.  We can adjust our schedule a little to accommodate and I'm liking that right now.

Sleeping is getting better and better.  We finally occasionally have a night where we put them down and they don't wake up until the morning.  Other nights, I'm getting up once or twice early on and it normally doesn't take much to get them back to sleep.  Day light savings time is killing me though.  Its almost been a week and they still wake up 45 minutes early.

Our eating schedule?  Not much has changed here.  Still the same schedule.

Our favorite foods?  I've finally got them to eat string cheese and yogurt and they love it.

Our likes? Our new squeaker shoes (not annoying at all), trick-or-treating, giving hugs, running through the curtain in the closet, being tickled, and going to the park.

Our dislikes?  Falling down, running in to walls, when they are tired.

Our favorite games/toys?  Puzzles and books.  They absolutely love looking at catalogs.  Their favorite is Fisher Price.

Our milestones?  They all seem to be running better.  They are trying to repeat words that you say.

Things we do to make Mom and Dad smile?  Play quietly with each other, hug and hold hands, giggle, say "Mama" or "Dada".

The Ending to My Breastfeeding/Pumping Journey

My breastfeeding journey with my triplets was nothing like I expected.  My goal when I was pregnant was to breastfeed for one week and if that worked out I would try to make it to 6 months.  Little did I know that my little ones would never learn to latch (bummer) and that my body would produce MORE than I needed for my 3 babies.  While in the NICU for 12-13 days, my girls were fortunate enough to receive donor breast milk while I was building up my supply.  Our hospital is one of the first in the nation to offer donor breast milk to preemies rather than only offering formula.  Since my girls were little, even for their age, the doctors asked us to give them one bottle of extra calorie formula per day.  They did that for about 6 weeks and by that point my supply had more than caught up to their demand.  So it was solely breast milk, until about 8 months when they were supplemented with about 1-2 oz of formula per day because they were eating more than I could supply.  When they began eating more solids and drinking less milk, my supply caught up and they were only on breast milk again.

I was hungry ALL of the time and never felt full.  I was on a strict no dairy/no soy diet, but I still managed to eat a ton.  I ended up 20 lbs lighter than I was when I got pregnant (I call it the triplet diet).  All of my calories were going to my boobs to make that precious liquid gold for my girls.  I started off pumping 7-8 times per day, by 6 months I was pumping 6 times per day, and by 1 year I was pumping 3-4 times per day.  We had to buy a deep freezer for the extra milk.

Taylor was weaned to cow's milk at 12 months old since she had no allergies.  At 12 months, I began adding dairy to my diet to make sure Sam and Mallory had outgrown their allergies before giving them whole cow's milk.  At 14 months, they were all weaned.  I continued pumping another month to wean myself and also to add to the stock pile in the freezer.

In October, I was able to donate two large boxes of breast milk back to Texas Children's Hospital.  I felt like it was the least I could do to give back to the hospital that took such great care of my trio.  It made me feel so good to help out the preemies in the NICU and I'm so proud of myself for sticking to it for so long.  I also have to give much deserved credit to all of those that have helped me out with the girls along the way.  Without someone here to take care of them, I wouldn't have been able to sneak away for that 20 minutes to pump.  So I thank you all very much (and so do the preemie babies :)

The end of my breastfeeding journey was actually bittersweet.  I was happy to drop each and every pump since it would give me that much more time to catch up with things around the house, but it was also sad for me.  As crazy as it sounds, I will miss the sound of that pump and the feeling I got when I would feed my girls.

Happy Halloween from the Patterson Zoo!

Halloween this year was a little different.  We were able to celebrate at our new house!  We haven't even officially moved in and the neighbors are already including us in their block parties.  We had such a fun time and are excited to be a part of this tradition.

We dressed up as The Patterson Zoo!  The girls absolutely love animals and making animal noises right now, so I thought it would be appropriate to dress them as a lion, elephant, and monkey.  Brian and I went as zoo keepers and our parents were our "Zoo Crew".  The girls were very weary at the beginning about their costumes but somehow Mallory and Sam kept their whole costume on ALL night and Taylor's elephant hood came on and off occasionally.  I was very proud of them.

After having some food at the cul-de-sac on our block, we headed out trick-or-treating with everyone.  We straggled behind but the girls really got the hang of it.  They walked up to the door and would stick out their pumpkins or just dig right in and grab their own candy.  Now, they don't know what candy is nor have they ever tasted it, but they knew they wanted it... lots of it.  Everyone handing out candy thought they were so cute and would keep giving it to them, so most of it was recycled back in to the giver's stash.  The girls lasted a lot longer than we thought as well.  The adults were ready to go home, but the kids kept going for one more block.  They walked so much and did so well.  I'm glad their first trick-or-treating experience was a good one.  Enjoy our pictures :)

Taylor's "Say Cheese" face.

Sam was hoarding her candy.  She was in the wagon all by herself and hiding candy everywhere and then looking at it and putting it back in her bucket.  Then she would take huge handfuls and hide it again.  She was hyper and happy about her candy.  So cute.

Back home checking out their stash of candy.  They got to split half a fun size 3 Musketeers.
